Recognizing organizational excellence can be difficult if you do not know what to look for. In “Recognizing Organizational Excellence”, I propose that periods of transition are the best indicators of excellence when an organization’s ability to prepare, adapt, and refocus all within a set period of time are tested.
As leaders, we strengthen our organizations to overcome challenges since our responsibility to the communities we serve do not pause. It is falls on us to ensure that internal transitions of leadership and/or procedural method can occur without disruption to citizen customers. In this artifact, I describe how excellence is achievable through method, demonstrated consistency in goal attainment, and professional development of the workforce.
Analyzing the budget of Huntsville, Alabama was a critique of their financial report of FY 2014. This review practiced capabilities of auditing financial reports to determine the accuracy of reported information. I found that the city’s departments were effective stewards of tax-payer money, but were weak in communicating this information and how financial decisions now fed municipal goals in the future.
Utilizing this knowledge will enable me to manage organizational fiscal responsibilities. Including Measures of Performance will help citizens understand to what degree their money is being used efficiently. It also illustrated one example of how local government implemented programs with fiscal responsibility. |
Leading in public organizations requires the ability to manage change amid a multitude of dynamic considerations while still accomplishing department responsibilities. These examples all demonstrated how leaders went about organizational change among diverse and decentralized structures. They underscore the importance of clearly articulated goals, recognition of issues which prevent their achievement, and the ability to create alternatives. With this framework and the understanding of influencing environments, organizations can work productively within a myriad of conditions.
